what a day

Hello,

Here it is, Saturday evening, and we're just hanging out at home. We got a new leather couch today. It's very comfortable and easy to clean. A couple from church needed to get rid of it and asked if we wanted it. It meant, of course, re-arranging the living room and moving some things to another room but it was worth it. It's in real good condition and did I mention it's comfortable?

Only one more day till the big award ceremony. Having said that, I'll break down the five best directors. Some directors who have won this award in the past include: Frank Capra, John Ford, Vincente Minnelli, Clint Eastwood and Ron Howard. Michael Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, was snubbed. He deserved a nom for weaving a story and characters that flow and are easy to follow in a movie that could have had one scratching their head saying, "huh?"

Martin Scorsese: His fifth nom and still 0 wins. He manages to make an otherwise uninteresting, not to mention egomaniac, subject into a compelling and exciting film. I saw this yesterday and even before I saw it, I was thinking this guy should finally win with his biopic of Howard Hughes, The Aviator. Should Win & Will Win

Clint Eastwood: His Million Dollar Baby had me yawning for the first 25 mins and the twist ending was more of a letdown than a shocker. It's not his best film, in my humble opinion, and I'm still not sure why critics are raving about it. Yes, it was difficult to get made, after being rejected by several studios, but his wester Unforgiven was much better.

Taylor Hackford: Not a hack movie, but not a real interesting one either. Yes, Jamie Foxx is wonderful as Ray Charles but this more a performance film than a winning film.

Alexander Payne: The worst movie by this director that I've seen. And believe me that's saying something because it means that About Schmidt was better. Another movie that has me scratching my head over the raves it's getting from critics. This kind of movie doesn't usually win anyway.

Mike Leigh: The only movie whose director is nominated that I didn't see. Leigh's films, however, are usually compelling and tell touching and heartbreaking stories.

And now for the RIDICULOUS ITEM OF THE DAY.....I must warn you this story has some sensitive content. You may want to read with caution.

A Chicago man tried to sue his former lover for emotional distress and theft. It was dismissed. However, on appeal, he was told he could sue for emotional distress but not theft. Apparently his former lover got pregnant and this caused him "nausea, headaches, and robbed him of his sleep and appetite." Here's the kicker, the two never had sex; they had oral sex. Allegedly, at some point, the woman kept some of the sperm and used it to get pregnant. The ruling asserts that "when the plaintiff 'delivered' his sperm, it was a gift. There was no agreement that the original 'deposit' would be returned upon request." Now it goes back to the circuit court for ruling. Truth really is stranger than fiction.

enjoy your night, wherever you are.

love,

p
